Choosing the correct marine air conditioner depends on many variables.

or checking the boat manufacturer’s original specifications.

Marine air-conditioning load calculations are affected by several factors, including:

• Cabin size and volume
• Number, size, and type of windows
• Amount of direct sunlight
• Insulation quality (R-value)
• Number of people typically onboard
• Heat-generating equipment (electronics, refrigeration, cooking appliances, lighting, etc.)
• Frequency of doors and hatches opening
• Desired interior temperature

General BTU sizing guidelines (rule of thumb)

These guidelines are provided for reference only and are not a substitute for a professional load calculation:

• Pleasure boats (average use): ~14 BTU per cubic foot
• High sun-exposure areas (pilothouse, helm, unshaded cabins): 16–19 BTU per cubic foot
• Below-deck spaces used mainly at night (staterooms): 10–12 BTU per cubic foot

Important: Oversizing a unit can lead to poor humidity control, as the system may cycle off too
quickly to properly dehumidify the air.

Installation-specific items — such as seawater pumps, plumbing components, ducting, venting, grilles, and fittings — vary by vessel and layout and are not included. These items must be selected separately based on your setup.

If you are replacing an existing marine air-conditioning unit, most installations can reuse the existing set up.
Many customers refer to this as a ‘plug-and-play’ replacement.
